Planning permission was granted for the erection of a care village (Use Class C2) for elderly people comprising a new three and four storey building with a 72 bed care home and 28 care apartments, linked to the conversion of the former Maxims nightclub building for ancillary uses (offices, tea rooms, a hair salon, community heritage gallery and training space) including access, car parking, amenity areas, landscaping and associated works.  Listed building consent was secured for the repair, alteration and selective demolition works required to facilitate the re-use of the former Maxims building.

Heritage work included attendance at pre-application discussions with the Council.  Strategic planning input was provided by the Team on commencement of the project through to condition discharge.  Technical reports completed a Desk Top Archaeology Report; a Heritage Statement (to appraise the significance and impact on the listed building) and a Planning Statement.  The practice submitted and managed both applications and contributed to the clients Heritage Lottery Fund grant application.

Our archaeologist completed a watching brief during an initial soft strip of the building and historic remains were recorded including the preparation of scaled drawings of selected architectural details.  Samples of historic wallpaper were removed for analysis with findings reported to the County Archaeologist.  A watching brief observed excavations to the car park, an area of recognised archaeological potential.
