Senior / Principal Heritage Consultant Position

Full time (37.5 hrs pw)

Company Overview

Paul Butler Associates is one of the leading town planning practices in the North West. Formed in 1992, we have a wide ranging and stimulating list of clients and projects split between the public and private sectors.

Although a planning consultancy, the practice has provided advice on projects involving Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas and other heritage assets since its inception in 1992, and therefore specialise in projects where heritage and conservation are key considerations. The practice is now looking to grow the heritage and conservation side of the business. The successful candidate will be key to this growth.

The role

We are seeking a committed, commercially minded and ambitious consultant at Senior / Principal level to support our continued growth. The consultant will be confident and motivated to work under their own steam, yet also a team-player.

The successful candidate’s main responsibility will be the undertaking of heritage assessments, i.e. preparing and contributing to reports addressing direct and indirect impacts of developments on listed buildings, conservation areas, and other heritage assets. Other work may include the preparation of heritage appraisals, EIA built heritage chapters, representations to Historic England etc. As, when, and if required, there may also be a requirement for the successful candidate to assist with planning matters, for exampling assisting with the coordination of planning applications.

Day-to-day work can partly be undertaken within the office and partly via home-working, with site visits and meetings to be attended as required. The majority of the Practice’s work is within the North West of England (and particularly Greater Manchester), but the firm does advise on projects throughout the UK. The company has embraced the use of virtual meetings, but also values in-person contact and meetings, therefore work is likely to be a mixture of home and office working. 

Responsibilities

  • Providing professional commercially-focused heritage advice which is client facing and/or working with wider project teams.
  • Preparation of Heritage Impact Statements, Heritage Appraisals, ES Built Heritage chapters, Appeal Statements and more.
  • Providing heritage advice at feasibility, pre-app, application or appeal stage, including reviewing and providing comments on Scopes of Work / Method Statements.
  • Ability to work with a range of professionals within the planning and development sector.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of heritage policy and best practice.
  • Undertaking other office duties relevant to the post and business.

Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant employment within private and/or public sector.
  • A relevant conservation degree and/or a full member of the IHBC (or due to apply for membership imminently).
  • A track record of working in a fast paced environment.
  • Broad understanding of heritage including knowledge of key built heritage legislation.
  • Experience assessing the significance of (and effect of change on) a wide range of designated and non-designated heritage assets including in relation to setting.
  • Experience in building recording and archival research beneficial.
  • Experience of AutoCAD to prepare heritage significance plans beneficial.
  • A sound knowledge of architectural history.
  • An ability to provide a professional service to clients and secure new commissions.
  • Excellent written, presentation, communication and client care skills will be essential.
  • A full driver’s license and access to a car would be beneficial.
